Multi Layered BRDF Materials

The best render engine is worthless if the materials doesn't behave fully correct according to natural laws of light. For physical calculation one needs a true physical Material (=BRDF). In Vray the BRDF Material is the heart of V-Ray, not an added effect, very fine balanced to work perfect together with GI, and all aspects of light reflection, absorption and scattering. It is multi-layered, based on true BSDF/BRDF code and brings highly realistic glossy reflections, anisotropy which can both be textured, and last not least perfect and physical based subsurface scattering (fast SSS2, refractive SSS), all at V-Ray light speed!

The VRAYforC4D 1.2.6 update just released brings many enhancements. Beside the super easy proxy2 which are even faster and more efficient than before, users can use GI now without loosing one brain cell to any GI setting. The new Universal presets can be used for any scene, indoor and outdoor. Just choose, use and have fun. This presets bring higher quality than before with even more speed. With NOTHING to be needed to adjusted(!). In the same manner there are ready to use animation presets that can be used for very easy non flickering object GI animation. The VRAYforC4D license will be locked to the MAXON license it is bought for , like with most other Cinema4d plugins (please read the EULA in Manual for license details). at major Cinema4d updates like from v10 to v11, new license keys will be given out at no additional cost. All updates until 1.5 (including 1.5) are free to all customers.

It is no secret that V-Ray has this unique magic light and surface quality artists (and their clients) love. this comes from special ways V-Ray handles and calculates light, surfaces and images internally in a very well balanced way.


Ultra fast and clean GI, unlimited light bounces!

GI is not the only secret of V-Rays Image quality, but of course one important aspect of V-Ray. It offers the maybe fastest and most reliable GI of all render engines out there. With near Physical correct solutions at speed that only V-Ray can deliver it crunches huge amounts of polygons in light speed like no other.
V-Ray offers the unique fastest and highest quality IR+Lightchache method which calculates light with unlimited light bounces and gives at the same time instant preview of the image. V-Ray is the only application to offer the special V-Ray Lightcache algorithm which is one of the most superior GI methods today.

Due to our easy GI presets in a drop down menu, they are also very simple to use, just "choose and use", don't worry about any GI setting anymore (new in v1.2.6) V-Ray is built around GI from ground. Global illumination is not only and "effect" in V-Ray, it is its base core. It delivers the best you can get - with V-Ray GI you can concentrate on other things and just enjoy the GI quality. V-Ray - often copied, but never reached.


Flicker free Object and Camera Animation

V-Ray is world famous for its unsurpassed Animation capabilities and quality, V-Ray GI offers many ways for choice to achieve fast and flicker free object or camera animation at full high resolutions quality, that was only available for still images in past.
Imagine you calculate the GI for Your scene only once , and then move freely around with your camera without the need to calculate the GI again?
Yes, this is very possible in V-Ray, and a lot more!

With its extensive Gi caching methods a whole gi scene can be saved, reused and even expanded later on, even if the resolution of the final output changes. This can bring rendering time for an camera fly-through from several days to just a few hours. The saved GI solutions can even be reused for high resolution stills to complete all needed tasks in one go. This also works of course very fast on MAXON NET-Render Module. in V-Ray you can render GI passes also over more than one computer of course.

Also for flicker free object animation V-Ray offers absolute highest quality and you have several cached and non cached workflows for your choice, V-Ray delivers best quality you can get at un-reached high speeds.


Real physical correct V-Ray lights

Although V-Ray uses the native Cinema4D lights, it automatically transforms them into V-Ray physical lights with detailed control, for even higher quality and balance. You have the choice to use photometric lights with intensity units in watts, lumen, radiance similar to v12/13, but they fully calibrated to use the real physical BRDF system and deliver highest quality only possible in physical engines like V-Ray. Only with a real physical BRDF material core you get physical correct calculations for light, GI and surfaces.

Of course you can import light manufactor IES data. Thousands of such files are freely available in the internet, with a few mouse clicks you can use them within V-Ray. IES lights give you the realistic light distribution of real lamp fixtures, a huge benefit for architectural or design and furniture visualization. You can also texture lights with shaders, even shadows can be textured.

There are several ready to use presets within the V-Ray light controls, the various V-Ray lights offer a also wide range of controls for shadow, reflection visibility, specular, etc.
All lights can also be stored within a cached GI solution for ultra fast re-use.
There is no need in V-Ray for fake lights or other "work arounds". just place the lights as it would be in real world. The V-Ray lights will react just as real...


Photometric Physical Sun and Sky for indoor and outdoor:

Vr-Ray offers also the ability to transform any light or a native C4d sun into a full physical sky environment. Therefore you need only to set time and location and render. it will always provide you with a fully physical correct and beautiful light solutions with just a few clicks. and it also automatically fits perfect with all IES and photometric lights.


Fast Real Physical Camera Simulation:

The V-Ray physical camera works like a real world camera. It is calibrated to work with the V-ray BRDF materials, GI and photometric lights together to achieve the physical quality V-ray delivers. It has features to easy adjust physical DOF and motion blur without changing the exposure of the image, so you can fine tune your images in the most easy way. The V-Ray physical camera works with ALL V-ray render and GI modes together. special fisheye, 360 degree panorama images and custom lenses are possible together with the V-ray physical cam. Using the Physical camera does not affect the render times in V-Ray (it might be even a bit faster).


Full Hdri Support

In Vray all is calculated in full HDRI 32bit per channel mode. therefore also every input, texture, shader, color value etc. and output can be set to 32bit without any quality loss. this is very valuable for productions environments or demanding artists. HDRI images can also be used to light the scene, the render absolutely fast, can cast detailed shadows and even real caustics.

Real Physical multi layered BRDF material

 

 

 

V-Ray expands Cinema4d with its high level multi layered BSDF/BRDF Materials. The Material layout is similar to the Cinema4d Material, only it offers more channels with more control and true "BRDF" real physical quality. Only with a real BRDF in the core an engine delivers real physical results. V-Ray is built around the BDRF system.

All surface calculations are based on real world physical behavior without typical shader faking needed. Reflections, glossy reflections, transparency, translucency, depth absorption, and physical correct subsurface scattering, backlight (also single surface SSS), lumiance, normal maps, true and ultra fast micro poly and vector displacement, true anisotropy with textured angle control,... the V-Ray Material offers almost unlimited possibilities.

With the unique natural layered VRAYforC4D BRDF Material, it is fun to create materials. It goes a new and different way in creating materials, more natural than ever, and more control you ever imagined. Metals do look like real metal, wood like wood, plastic like plastic, stone like stone, any surfaces like real...

V-Ray Blendmaterial

The V-Ray blend material expand the wide possibilities of the BRDF Material even more. It lets you layer up to 10 full BRDF materials, as blend them together in any way, controlled by textures, gradients or falloffs. an excellent method also to create multi layered materials like car-paints, perls, satin, coated wood or plastic etc...


V-Ray 2-Sided Material

V-Ray 2 sided is one of the most unbelievable materials; it renders translucent thin objects in almost the same speed as you render a plain diffuse surface!


It transports the light from one side to the other, it even casts shadows and produced fully correct GI. Never think again if you can afford translucent rise paper, lampshades, curtains, leaves, thin paper, back-lit architectural panels or sandblasted glass. All a no-brainer in VRAYforC4D. It renders same speed as a plain solid material. You can even texture the front and backside different and control how the one side interacts with the other. so you can use now translucency or "single surface sub surface scattering" on any surface without limits:-)


Proxy2 - fastest 3d instancing - super easy(!)

V-Ray provides one of the most efficient Proxy solutions out there. millions or even billions of polygons, many many thousands of copies of objects can be rendered without using more ram.
the instances can have varying size, rotations, and materials, you can scatter them with Maxons mograph or other tools like "paint on surface" if you want. any object can be converted with a simple tag to a V-Ray proxy.
just click on "render instance" in any c4d generator and this will be transformed on the fly to a real V-ray proxy 2, even faster and more efficient than before!
So what is Proxy good for? - for rendering many, many 3d plants, or cars, or furniture, or 3d humans par example, You can now use proxy2 for anything in the scene that duplicates. It saves not only ram but also is a lot faster than normal objects. Proxy2 can also be scaled, use mograph color shaders to bring in color variation. Render billions of polygons in few minutes- only possible with new proxy2.


Camera & Object Motion Blur

VRAYforC4D provides nice and beautiful motion blur for cameras and moving polygon objects.**(note: some limitations yet, like no deformed objects yet) it is simple to use, just turn motions blur on and render - thats all:-) adjust able with simple tag on per object basis. its strength is automatically adjusted physical correct via the physical camera settings like shutter speed or shutter angle etc.


V-Ray fast micro poly displacement

Vray offers ultra fast and detailed multithreaded micro poly displacement. It also works for massive amounts of usage in a scenes and is still fast when using GI and other high end setups. A special new displacement material Cinema4D gives you ultimate power and control. you can now use displacement as true render time subdivision surface effect for ultra detailed displacements. A new "water level" feature let you cutout parts of geometry in render time (see example image of the chain below, this is only a flat single surface displaced(!)



Superfast physical DOF & bokeh lense effects


V-Ray offers high level and physical correct Depth of Field. The best is that with most presets it comes at NO EXTRA render time cost. It also can calculated the so called bokey effects that take the imperfections and shape of the lens into account. It is also very simple to use, its intensity is controlled by the physical camera settings, just like in real. actually you only have to turn it on, that's it, V-Ray does the rest for you again. You can use also non physical settings to fine tune DOF for your artistic needs.

Of course it suffers not the limitations of other solutions, it renders correct behind refractions, glass and even in reflections you can see correct DOF and bokeh. This gives you the power for extreme realism in your scenes, and unsurpassed speed. some examples:

 

[Features 03]

Special V-Ray HDRI dome light

In this scene there is NO single light.
Yes you read correct, no lights in there!
Only one HDRI image (high dynamic range image) was placed outside the building. This isnt possible with any other engine at that speed and quality.

All light comes from that high dynamic range image. it was rendered with full GI & Physical camera. You see the good light quality, the crisp GI shadows, there is even SSS on the carpet, all reflective and glossy materials with volume refraction etc...

does such a scene render long in V-Ray? - no, of course not
this HDRI only image only rendered in less than 3min 42 sec on our mac pro!


V-Ray 360 degree special camera

Render in a true hemispheric 360 degree image. Create stunning effect with this special camera or render out HDRI environments or compositing backgrounds. Image credit by LAUBlab, city model, skyscraper, proxy trees with 22 million polygons, rendered in only 8min @ print resolution.


V-Ray additional special cameras

In addition VRAYforC4D offers other special camera features, here as example a fisheye distortion like in real lenses or a cubic rendering that renders in one go a image that can be directly use to make a perfect cubic Quicktime or flash VR. in V-Ray there is no limit to come as close as possible to reality and maybe even beyond... of course those cameras render the same speed as any normal camera in V-Ray;-)


VRAYforC4D direct MAXON Mograph support

V-Ray and Mograph are close friends, one of the best MAXON Modules combines with the best proxy Render engine for c4d, provides us users with huge power and unseen possibilities. Many Mograph functions are supported, Maxon delivers power object scattering in-house to bring V-Ray and V-Ray proxy2 feature to ultimate power. V-Ray of course also works with 3rd party plugins like the great "paint on surface" tool or the great "surface spread" plugin.


VRAYforC4D +Thinking Particles + Proxy2 objects:

 

 




Thinking Particles is a very powerful tool in Cinema4d. Therefore VRay also renders Thinking Particle objects directly and also with GI very fast.
You can even use instances or even V-Ray proxy2 as particle source and spread the Proxies with your Thinking Particles setups:-)

If You use Proxies you need only ram for one single particle. all other particles are true 3d instances. this gives enormous possibilities to the Cinema4d artists, never seen before. check it out, V-Ray + thinking particles can make quite addicted!

 


VRAYforC4D and MAXON Hair module rendering

A typical hair-grass scene for architectural visualization, it renders very fast and looks so much better than any texture or displacement methods.

If you set the hair module to one of the modes where actual geometry is produced (direct on render time), V-Ray can render Hair direct in V-Ray without the need to convert to polygons. specially on 64bit platform this works very well and amazing fast. as V-Ray doesn't slow down on many polygons, you can make fields of grass, hair, fur or similar things and combine the power of hair with the power of VRAYforC4D. V-Ray renders hair with full GI and reflection interaction, for superb realism!


VRAYforC4D auto render image in stripes for NET

  

Use the V-Ray automatic split render function, to split any huge image into vertical or horizontal stripes. If you split that on 6 machines for example the render time will be almost 1/6 of the original time, as V-Ray can used a chached GI for this, you will never have any seems in this method. Best use this with MAXON net render or on several VRAYforC4D workstations. It can be a great time saver!


VRAYforC4D Full Render Region tool

The Vray render region tool lets you crop a part of the image or animation and (re)render only that part, at full final size in picture viewer.


VRAYforC4D fast high poly count rendering

V-Ray can render extremely well high polygon scenes. t keeps it speed also there. If it is 3d trees, detailed CAD models, cars, 3d humans. V-Ray will not get much slower with many polygons, in fact V-Ray loves many polygons, specially with 64bit it "crunches" into high poly models. This scene is a converted very detailed 300mb CAD Rhino3d nurbs file (imported with rhino.io), plus a huge city model plus detailed trees that have each 25000+ 3d leaves (with texture) per tree, rendered in less than one hour, the c4d file is almost 500mb, that's is without the 3d trees which where scattered many thousands with mograph as proxy instances...

Fast SSS2

 

 

The new V-Ray fast SSS2 shader is a physical based SSS calculation that incorporates intelligent optimizations, under sampling and interpolation methods, to achieve unbelievable speed with superb results.

In some setups you can render them almost in real time, even in the interactive region render, you get very instant results. Overall the render speed is not much more than with a a normal diffuse material.


Fast SSS2 offers 4 different modes, all aspects are controllable by textures or shaders, also native cinema4d shaders, and all parts react like they would in reality to light. It comes in 2 flavors: one as new dedicated SSS2 material, like some know it already from newest 3d max version. The second as a new channel direct in our special, physicall BRDF material.

The SSS2 material can be blended with all BRDF channels seamless. Materials can be stacked on it, and it can be also blended using the V-Ray blend material for creating complex highend SSS effects.

Very important is that in contrary to other engines (v13p.e) the V-Ray fast SSS2 Material also stays fast with very high polygon counts and complex models. The example on the left side shows an image rendered in 9 seconds, full SSS2, textured, photometric lights, full GI, 700000 polygons, @ ONLY 9 seconds render time!



With fast SSS2 you can produce materials like all kind of plastics, stone, marbles, jade, wax, skin, fluids like milk, juice, blood, oil, ketchup, fruits, vegetables, creams, food , plants, thin cut wood, fabrics, lamp shades, water, skin, leather, grass, furniture,..., all You can think of that has a scattering component.
Due to the consistent great calculation speed, there is no limit in SSS use anymore. It can be used for small objects or characters as well in big architectural scenes.

Advanced Dirt & AO Material shader

V-Ray gives you a very fast was to render high end AO (ambient occlusion), the V-Ray dirt material shader lets you produce AO scene wide or as shader(material based), Furthermore the material is also very nice to add procedual dirt. all aspects of it are texture driven, and it can be used multi layered to achieve complex dirt, stain and dust.

the above image is rendered without GI, only with a simple AO material and glossy reflections, render time 1min10sec. on our mac pro.


Special override material/override funtions

For professional light setup it is good to test the scene in a grey "clay material". in V-Ray this is an easy task, simple drag and drop any material to be used as temporal render material, without loosing the original assignment. even more it allows you to include and exclude certain materials from being override. so you can have still glass active for example and only the rest as clay material. it saves you many hours in setting up archviz scenes. in addition there is a special V-Ray overwrite material that lets you set different settings for GI, color bleed, GI intensities, shadow and reflection on a per object/per material basis for deep artistic control.


Automatic "LWF"/linear workflow

V-Ray of course offers full linear workflow, called LWF. In contrary to other solution, V-ray gives you all needed choice, like custom gamma settings, special 8 & 32 bit workflow tools and custom interaction. Still if you want it easy, it does all at one simple click for you. just set desired gamma and click the "LWF button. V-Ray does the rest for you.


Advanced tone mapping control

Linear workflow is one thing all modern artist will want to use, but in additional also tone mapping from the 32 bit data tot he image output is essential. V-Ray offers state of the art tone mapping control. It allows the artist to exactly control all aspects of contrasts color and burn values.


New automatic proxy2:

With V-Ray proxy you can render billions of polygons. The possibilities for proxy use is anything that is high polygon and/ or used more than onetime in scene.
Render huge woods with many many thousand of detailed trees & plants, huge grass for wheat fields, 50000 of detailed cars, a stadium full of people or what ever you can imagine....
You can also use the Mograph shader to color each scattered proxy different or to give slight variations in color, to achieve nice natural looks. Proxies can be painted on object with Surface painter, scattered with Surface spread or Mograph. this image was rendered by Holger Schoemann with the great HQ plants. Another small example, a proxy wheat field by LAUBlab:

Here Mograph was used to scatter a proxy copy of an original group of object. the proxy object react like real objects, correctly with real area shadow, GI interaction, reflection, DOF, etc. the light comes from the physical sky.

In the same way you can use the surface spread plugin and or also the great surface painter. you can have as many proxies and also different proxies in a scene as you like.


Detailed multi channel environments & background

In V-ray the environment tab lets you control the background, reflections, refractions and the GI in separate channels. no need for multiply sky objects with setting compositing tags. the V-Ray environment lets you map, adjust and control all of these aspects in one tab. the Environment setting also work hand in hand with the Physical sky and can be per channel included/excluded to enable easy mixing of environment; hdri and Physcial Sky.


True 3d volume scattering & fog & volume light

 

 

Sometimes You want clouds, or fog, or real bad weather to be simulated. V-Ray can do all of this, not faked but really volumetric calculated(!), and fast. You can define the atmosphere or regions in the atmosphere (via gizmo objects) to really scatter light, as it does when it has fine particles of dust, smoke or water in it. it also allows you to make visible sunbeams, like when sun shines through a window into a room or between the clouds.

 


 

 

In the same physical way the Volume scattering can be used to renders Volume lights. All aspects of light are really scattered, including full GI (!), Even though it is not faked but calculated on physical basis and therefore providing very real and exact results, the effect can be very very fast. In adding true volumetrics V-Ray changes the way you render. Take care it might make addicted.




together with the caustics feature, volume atmospherics and spectral dispersion you can render also pyhsical setups like this in V-Ray, like the unbiased engines, only in lighting fast speed, this example rendered only 1min 8 sec, with gi, full spectral calculation, no precaching involved:


Mesh & Material photometric lights

V-Ray meshlights are available in 2 types. One as normal light where you can link an object to it, or directly as BRDF material attribute. Both types are real area lights with photometric control in watt and lumen. The brdf can be freely textured with images or c4d shaders (also layered) and UV mapped.


V-Ray fur


 

 

V-Ray fur is great for cool rugs, grass, and of course fur. all animated if you want, all setting can be defined texture driven. it is super fast, render time generated proxy like geometry.



On the right side a frame from an V-Ray fur test animation. the grass is generated via V-Ray fur, scattered on a c4d landscape object and animated via a c4d noise texture. rendered with full GI of course.
