PcModWin is a commercial Windows version of the United States Air Force Research Laboratory's MODTRAN model. MODTRAN is the recognized standard for computing atmospheric transmission and radiance at medium to high spectral resolution (0.1 cm^-1). PcModWin wraps around MODTRAN and makes it easy to use.

MODTRAN5® is licensed from the United States Air Force and Ontar is the only organization to have a license for this purpose. Ontar achieves this standard status by using the latest released version of MODTRAN5® from the Air Force Research Laboratory.

The basic atmospheric calculation in PcModWin5 uses the MODTRAN5® model. MODTRAN5® performs accurate and speedy calculations from the UV through the visible, infrared and microwave spectrum (0 to 50,000 cm^-1). Calculations in the visible and ultraviolet spectral regions (> 22600 cm^-1) are performed at lower spectral resolution (20 cm^-1), while those in the IR and longer wavelengths are done at 0.1 cm^-1 resolution. MODTRAN5® is distributed as a large (> 35000 lines) FORTRAN program oriented around command line operation, with inputs taken from numerous formatted input files. Operating MODTRAN5® directly requires extensive knowledge of the file formats and input parameters for the code.

PcModWin, however, is a user-friendly input/output generation system developed by Ontar. It is a Windows-based program that organizes the inputs into screens that are easy to fill out. Click here for an example. Instead of selecting integers for cryptically named variables and hand-editing a formatted text file, you can point and click selections to prompts like "Model Atmosphere". PcModWin creates the necessary formatted input files to run MODTRAN5®, based on your inputs. It also includes output plotting to quickly view the results of a calculation.
